This is the second book in the Dresden Files of 20 in total I believe. This was a lot more fun to read than the first and it was a quick read as always. This one there are a bunch of werewolves that are starting to kill people so Harry and Murphy are back at it looking for killers that most people don’t believe exist. I like the banter that Harry always has, the only thing is when I picture him I don’t picture him as a big tall person I imagine him as someone short and stalky. The character development is great and probably why I like the second one better than the first because I had a little bit of background for the customers to fall into. I read this in about 5 days and it’s about 350 pages so a quick read. I am looking forward to continuing the series.

I just finished this book and the time to read it was much much shorter than the Second Ship took me. This one was actually suggested to me from another book I was reading and it is the first book in the series for Matt Reilly. When I first started reading this book and they found a space ship in the ice I was a little worried that I just picked up another spaceship book after just finishing one. Well this was much more than that and I liked the outcome a whole lot better. Also when I was talking to my mom about the book she mentioned what the plot line might be like as it might be an old remake. Well that was wrong too, so I was pleasantly surprised with this book.
The main plot line here is that in an Ice Station in Antarctica they find buried deep in the ice a space ship. While the scientist team goes down to investigate they are all killed. Then a recon group from the marines is sent in only to find the French army is already there. Then later in the book the British SAS show up along with the Navy seals and the Army Rangers. So needless to say there is a ton of action in the book and it moves at a great pace. The leader of the Marine Recon Team, Scarecrow, has a great background and has very good development. This is the first book in the series and I look forward to reading the second book. As always though I like to space out my authors by a book so I think I might go back to the Dresdin files after this one.
I finished this book a while ago. It was suggested via the top 100 list of Kindle book sales, also it was the first $0.99 book I have ever bought. It took me a long time to get through this book which I think was a combination of the fact I started watching Battle Star Galactica during this book. The long and short of the story is it takes place in New Mexico and the government stumbles upon a space ship in the desert. Shortly after this discovery there is a group of kids that find a second ship in the desert but decide not to tell anyone and explore the ship before the government takes it away. They start making daily trips to the ship and expoloring it where they find these little halo type devices that they start putting on their heads. Well these halos end up giving the special powers like being smarter and being in better shape and being stronger. They try to keep the ship a secret while they keep exploring and their experiences get more and more interesting. I am sure the second book rounds the corner on what is missing in the end of this but I have to be honest it was a little too boring and drawn out for me to read the second book.
This is the second book in the series with the Chess Team and I would almost say I liked it as much maybe better than the first one in the series, Pulse. Here the Chess Team is set out to Vietnam to find a cure for a new pandemic that will sweep the world of all the male humans as that is who it effects. In their search for the cure they start in a little village that for hundreds of years had men just drop dead for no apparent reason. Of course the village was superstitious and thought it was the evil spirits but there is a real virus that is killing them. Along their journey they run into an elite group of Vietnam soldiers who also want the virus, but that is because they wish to weaponize it for use against the world.
I love the way Jeremy ends his chapters because they almost all end on cliff hangers making it hard to put the book down and stop reading. I am looking forward to the next book in the series due out later this year. I also thinks its funny with some of the visuals and references that Jeremy uses because they are exactly how I am picturing them in my mind. For example when Rook was covering himself in mud to hide from the enemy he liken it to where in Predator Arnold is putting the mud all over his face and has a quote “Look, over there in the trees, I see you!” I was laughing pretty hard because I remember that exactly and even thought of it before I read it!
So this book was suggested to me via my Kindle blog that I read. Since I figured I didn’t really have any mystery books in my collection that I would start with this one. It also looks like this is now a TV series on the Sci-Fi channel. The blog said there is a pretty big cult following to this book series (14 in all) so I jumped in. In this book there is a wizard, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden who is trying to make a living in Chicago as a wizard for hire. The only wizard in the yellow pages actually. The world is still oblivious to the idea of vampires, wizards, and demons expect for a few select people who believe. Harry has teamed up with a detective in Chicago who is given murder cases with extreme circumstances that she leans on Harry to help her solve. This is a fun book and just the right length so I look forward to reading a bunch of these in the future. I also like the humor of the author and the fact its written in first person from Harry’s perspective. You meet a bunch of a fun characters such as Bob who is a talking skull that Harry uses as kind of like a hard drive to store information on because wizards have some negative effects on technology.
Geek Mafia, this book was suggested to me via Amazon those who bought Demon also bought this. This was my third attempt to find a book that was similar to Daemon and Freedom and this one come the closest so far. In this story a graphic novelist who starts a computer gaming company with his friends ends up being laid off by his long time partners because they didn’t like his working style. So while sulking in a drink at a local bar he runs into a hacker girl who wants to help him extort his friends for all the money they owe him. He ends up falling in love with the girl and the lifestyle of a con-person and finds out that he is fairly decent at it as well. The book drags a little in the middle but the beginning and ending are very good. There is a second book in the series but not sure if I will read that one, but it was a good break from all the other series I started
So it has been a few books since I read a James Rollins novel and this one sounded interesting. Under a volcano in the Arctic a giant underground cavern is found with multiple layers and depths of tunnels. As scientists start to explore this area the first team is lost and a second is sent in to figure out what happened. But they do sort of forget to mention that to the second team that they are their second try. With this new group they hope to explore what is down there and maybe find the original team. They run into some cave dwellings underground that might be clues as to who or what is down here. I would say that this book is very close to Ice Hunt, but I would have to say I liked Ice Hunt a little better. Maybe it was because it was the first book I read like that so I felt it was better. Either way this is still a good read and James does a great job with the plot and characters. I did feel it ended a little abruptly but the ending did work with the storyline.
So this is a continuation of the Old Man’s War series, there are 5 of them in total. In this sequel to the original we follow the Special Defense Forces aka The Ghost Brigade that we learned about from the first book. It seems that a few of our biggest enemies in the universe are grouping together and are going to destroy humanity. The only insight into how they are going to do this is a new Ghost Brigades member Jared Dirac who is a little unique as far as how he was created and what he already knows.
As with the first one I like this book because its Sci-Fi but not too nerdy and is an easy read. I like the fact I started with the first book and moved onto this one as I felt I already had a connection to some of the characters who had more of a minor role in the book as we are introduced to some new characters. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. But think I might take a break from outer-space and come back to Earth for a book or two!
Somewhere along my long life of a whopping 30 years, a 320 page book I now consider a ‘quick read’. I was able to read this book in about 5 days and that was with a day or two of not reading it. Also I would like to reiterate to not choose a book by its cover. This book was suggested to me for those who liked Daemon and I was looking for a book along the lines of Sci-Fi but not too nerdy or far out there (uhmm Snow Crash!). So the main story here is after your 75th birthday on Earth you are allowed to join the Colonial Defense Forces (CDF) and go fight a war that is brewing out in space. The thing is you know nothing about what really happens in the CDF because it is kept totally secret to everyone on Earth other than you can enroll when you are 75 and you can never return. Well since most people at 75 figured they have lived a good life and are tired of being old they join the CDF. They all assume they will undergo some magical change when the join the CDF, because after all who would want a 75 year old on the front lines. The story takes them to a bunch of different battles and friends and relationships are made along the way. John Perry our main character here is followed during this time. On Earth John was a writer for an advertising firm, but that doesn’t matter as no matter what your job was on Earth for the first 2 years (assuming you live that long) you are general infantry and fight along side with doctors and the homeless in this new place.
This is the first book in a series of 5 and since it was such a fast read I am now on the second one the Ghost Brigades. Which the title didn’t mean anything to me until I finished Old Man’s War. This story is very closely related to an Avatar storyline which is probably a pretty classic story of old people wanting to be young again! I enjoy the authors writing style and the book moves quickly and isn’t too Sci-Fi or nerdy.
So I was looking for a new author and maybe a new series of books to start reading so I went through Amazon and drilled through the categories until I got to the spy category. These books (there are 6 of them) were all rated really high and had a common review of James Bond in the 21st century. Alex Hawke the main character here has a family lineage that goes back to a famous pirate in the Caribbean. He is a wealthy billionaire who owns a bunch of companies and has a strong military background. I found this book fun to read as it was a good mix of ocean and spy that I have become a fan of recently. I am also a fan of a writer who can keep his reader interested in the last few chapters of the book and this one is a huge page turner especially at the end. Also I think I have some weird British thing going on with all my books lately as they seem to all be British people, maybe it is because it makes for fun dialog. The basics of the story is that Cuba has decided it wants to be a global power player to it adds a few heavy duty weapons to its arsenal. I also think its funny that Fidel Castro has a part in this book which was entertaining! I would recommend this author and look forward to continuing the adventures of Alex Hawke. I typically break up a series with one book in between just to keep it a little more interesting then reading them back to back so I don’t get tired of the authors writing style.
