Tivo HD Lite – $299

image So for those of us who cannot afford the full Tivo Series 3 there is the new Tivo HD Lite which holds 180SD TV and 20 hours HD TV.  It doesn’t have the nice OLED readout on the front of what is recording but it does support cable cards and has an eSATA port on the back for extra capacity.  I think this is a strong contender when you look at the crap recorders Motorola has for Comcast.

NAS and Homeserver

image This will be next on my list, of course after I win the lotto.  This bad boy will give you NAS and a home server all in one at an affordable price.  You are pretty limitless as far as what you want to do with this thing as here are the specs:

Processor: Intel ULV Celeron M 600MHz or 1GHz
RAM: One DDR SODIMM Socket, up to 1GB
SATA: Eight individual SATA II channels, 3 x eSATA ports + 5-bay SATA backplane
IDE: One 44 pin mini IDE connector, one CF socket
USB: Four USB 2.0 ports
Ethernet: Two 10/100 (Intel 82551ER) or two Gigabit Ethernet port (Intel 82541PI)
VGA: Intel chipset integrated, internal 15pin VGA adapter
Serial port: One RS232, internal IDC 10 pin connector
IRDA: One 5-pin connector
PS/2: One internal 2x 4-pin header for PS/2 keyboard and mouse
Capacity: 8TB + (using 1TB drives)
Power: ATX power, 180W, 110V to 240V AC, 50/60Hz
Dimensions: 6.75" x 9.5" x 11"

I would love to have this at my house as a home server, but there are many new things to add to the lineup before this but it is still a good idea.

Yamaha Sound Bar

image This has got to be the best idea ever, full surround sound out of one speaker using technology and angles to achieve the effect. The Japan-only YSP-500 has only 18 individual sound beam drivers as opposed to 42 in the YSP-4000. It’s also only 24-inches long, will fit easily under a TV and costs only $647. It support "Dolby digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS Neo:6" and as Paul Strauss notes, you need a sub to really get the most out of this soundbar. Unfortunately, there’s no mention of HDMI inputs. If YSP wants to go mainstream, Yamaha should bring this setup here.

JKDefrag Windows Defrager

image

JkDefrag is a powertool replacement for the regular windows defrager.  As you know windows likes to get heavily fragmented with its files so this tool allows you to optimize how those files are to increase power and speed

Automatic Update Searcher

image This program is a great idea, it searches all the programs you have and then goes online and finds out if you have the latest version of the application.  That is of course assuming that it can find the program on the Internet through its database.  Of 118 programs it found about 20, not too bad considering most of the ones it found were all open source apps which is good as those tend to be the ones that update the most.

As usual the price is right, $0 and super easy install and run.

Safety plug for headphones

image

This is a great idea, it has a little plug that goes into you laptop earphone mini jack and has a magnetic end that goes to an adapted that connects to your headphones.  This way if someone trips or grabs the cord the magnet releases and your laptop isn’t jerked across the room.  Now if they could just do this for the power cable everything would be good to go!

ZOHO – online office competitor

 image Thumbnail via WebSnapr: http://www.zoho.com

ZOHO is a great idea for a website, its all online it is has a writer, spread sheet, slide show, meeting, notebook, DB Reports, Planner, Projects, CRM, Wiki, Chat, Mail.  I do not know what I think about putting a lot of stuff online like this but still it makes a good idea.  Plus there is always the Open Office solution that just had an update and works very well.  The DB reports and the Creator sound very interesting as they give you the ability to create web based DB applications very easily. The best way to understand Zoho DB is to actually try it yourself. To start, you can create a new database or simply import an existing spreadsheet (from Zoho Spreadsheets or a desktop application like Excel). Zoho DB will convert that spreadsheet into a database. You can then interact with the data as if it were in a spreadsheet, or you can run queries on it as if it were a database. The application accepts queries in any SQL format (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Informix and ANSI SQL dialects).

WI-FI Detecting T-shirt

image

This shirt is totally dorky but pretty funny, kind of in line with the ‘I will not fix your computer’ T-Shirt.  This shirt detects wi-fi signals and lights up accordingly unfortunately it does not show if the network is opened or closed.  It operates off of AAA batteries.  The Wi-Fi Detector shirt is a Think Geek exclusive and will be available this October for $29.99.  Click the picture to go to the product page.

I will take the stairs!

image Afraid of heights? Then you’ll probably want to stay the hell away from the Bailong Elevator, a glass elevator built onto the side of a huge cliff in Zhangjiajie, China that takes you a whopping 1,070 feet high. This stomach-dropping ride is the highest and heaviest outdoor elevator in the world, and its future isn’t certain; apparently it’s bad for the cliffs to have a gigantic elevator stuck on the side of them. So if you feel like experiencing the pants-crapping good time that riding in this thing would provide, you’d better do it now while you still have the chance, as it might be dismantled in the near future. Hit the jump for an impressive picture of the elevator from the ground.
