Website of Abandoned Buildings

13030067This is a really cool website, it looks like most of these pictures take place in Russia as there are a lot of pictures from Chernobyl.  There are also a bunch of pictures from nuclear test sites from the islands that the US was testing on which are really cool.  Then there are a bunch of shipyard pictures too.

UndeletePlus – Restore Deleted Files

2009-02-18_192544Well I finally did what I always make fun of other people for doing.  I deleted a file that I needed (The last 3 years of my email!)  Luckily searching Google I ran into a Lifehacker article that listed a few applications and I tried this one and was very successful it just takes a while to get the files back but it is super easy to use.  I have attached it to this post in-case if it disappears as software likes to do these days:

WinDirStat – What is Eating Your HardDrive?

2009-02-17_092057

WinDirStat is a great little application that walks your file structure and then tells you the size of each folder as well as giving you a graphical representation of what files are the largest and taking up the most space.  I have never been a big fan of heatmaps but in this case it actually seems to work.  This is just a nice little clean up application and is available for both regular install and of course as a portable app.

Run BitPim as a Portable App

2009-02-10_091500It looks like you can run BitPim (Phone Manager for CDMA phones) as a portable app.  All you need to do is download the application, I have already packed everything up and it is good to go. Bitpim Portable

But if you need to do it from scratch first download the application and unpack all the files.  Then delete the uninstall files and add a ‘config’ subfolder.  Then just create a batch file with the following code:

bitpim.exe -d config

Then you will be able to run Bitpim from your pen drive or external hard drive.

GReader Redesigned – Globex Designs

2009-02-06_083400So my favorite skin for gmail has finally completed and released their redesign for greader.  I am a big fan of it and it looks really clean.  Looks like for now you have to manually update the plugin for Firefox and then update the styles after that but the end result is very nice.

Cforms II – WordPress Contact Form

2009-02-02_091012I wanted to wait until someone actually submitted a form using this plugin before I wrote about it.  This plugin allows you to create contact forms, or any forms really, inside WordPress.  It allows you to choose all the basic stuff like checkboxes, input fields, radio buttons and has a nice little CAPTCHA addon.  To create the forms it is more or less drag and drop onto a new form.  It also allows you to control the messages that come back when required fields are missing or if the form went through successfully.  Then inside WordPress Admin you can view all submitted forms in a nice little table and export all form submissions.  You also have the ability to push the submitted form to an email address and you can specify an SMTP server to use or you can just rely on sendMail function of PHP.  I would suggest using the SMTP settings as this will insure that your email does not hit spam filters of the receiving email box.  So far this plugin has worked out great for my ARP website as it has cut down on all spam by 100% and we are now getting more complete information thanks to the form validation features and it is all contained inside WordPress.

The homepage for the plugin is sort of interesting as it is a food website but if you read the content you will notice you are in the right place.  I would highly suggest this plugin for anyone who needs a form inside their WordPress Blog.

Set the PHP Upload File Size

Using the .htaccess file you can edit the maximum size allowed for file uploading to your server.  Obviously you do not want to pick something ridiculous but when your upload size is as small as say 2MB you might want to change that.

Edit you .htaccess file and add this code snippet:

php_value upload_max_filesize 50M

Teracopy – File Copy Utility for Windows

2009-01-27_212304Teracopy allows you to copy multiple files to another location very quickly and securely.  I just recently used it to transfer 50GB from my old 100GB external to my new 500GB external drive.  This did it very quickly and didn’t seem to lock up Windows at all and basically did it in the background without any interaction.

The interesting thing is that you just copy the files like you normally would in Windows and Teracopy takes over when the action happens.  There is also a portal app version of this application out there so you can run it from your pen drive.  If you are going to be copy mass amounts of files I would suggest using this application.

I have attached a copy of the most recent version but I would suggest going to their website to pull down the latest and greatest

WordPress Role Manager

2009-01-27_211815Well now that I have converted ARP’s website to use WordPress as the CMS I wanted to create users that could edit and write pages and do nothing with the rest of the website.  The default roles that WordPress comes with do not allow for this type of customization out of the box.  Well after some searching I found a Plug-in to do the management for me.

This plug-in is ajax controlled so as you click it to check the box it happens automatically.  I was able to create a new role and assign the privileges as needed and I think that it is going to work.

I have attached the plug-in to this post for reference.
