2009-04-01_193227Finally an application that does everything that I want it to.  I subscribe to FileHippo’s updated RSS feed so I need all the programs that are updated daily.  MediaMonkey was one of them and it caught my eye that it finds and fixes missing album art.  So I figured I would try it to manage my music.

Wow! Amazing application within a few hours I updated all my missing music art and also corrected a bunch of mislabeled tags, deleted some duplicate music, and leveled the volume on a few tracks.  This software is amazing and is really easy to use.  What would have taken me like 5 applications I can do all in one.

It also will manage my phone and iTouch.  So no more working with iTunes to sync music and it is soo much easier to pick music and fill my iTouch and I can also have it automatically sync and fill based on music I listen to here and there on my PC.  It also links in streaming music and a few other things amazing!

There is a paid version of the application that gives you more robust usage of ripping music and managing your large music library.  The price is a modest $39.99 but so far I haven’t found a reason to upgrade past the free version.  One thing I like is the super light package this all comes in <10MB  This software is a must have!

Audio Encoder / Ripper BonkEnc

2008-12-18_211753So tonight Laura needed to convert a WAV file to an MP3 file because she needed to send the file via email.  Well the WAV file was about 23mb while the mp3 came down to 2.5mb.  This application which is an open source application will convert any audio file type to mp3, ogg, FLAC and any other encoders you want to add.  This is a great utility to have.  It will also rip CD’s to that format.

Apple iPod Touch

image I hate to say it…yes HATE…but I must admit that this little thing is pretty awesome.  With the new iTouch I can access my email, check stocks, check the weather, browse the Internet (sorta) with a little hand held device.  This is great for things like when I just want to check my email and not deal with turning on a computer.  The integration with Yahoo! mail is great it is a realtime look into your folder any emails you delete, respond, forward, read are marked accordingly in Yahoo.

I did come upon this by winning it at a convention for work that I went to so the price couldn’t be much better ($0).  I won the 8GB model which holds enough music to keep me happy as that is about 2,000 songs but not my full library (running about 33GB).  I also, for my birthday, received my car connection bridge from my girlfriend so now I have it directly connected to my car and that is really nice.  No more dealing with changing CD’s and I got the connection cable that plugs into the headphone jack so I can plug into any MP3 player not just iPod.

I have it synced up with my outlook calendar which is linked through Plaxo to my Gmail account so now it is easy to see what meeting I need to be at next for work.  It is also synced with my Yahoo! contacts.  The web browser is alright and gets the job done but I wouldn’t surf the net for long with it.  Also Safari doesn’t support flash so anything with flash doesn’t work on the device but I just read something that said this will be changing soon.

For a first generation product I am very impressed.  But as usual Apple always kills the early adopters and added a 32GB model and rumors are they are going to drop the 8GB version and drop all prices by $100.  Right now the 32GB version runs $499 which is a lot of money but I would expect the price to drop to $399 in the near future.  As long as you find a way to work around iTunes, get the album art, update iTunes, get your MP3 tags inline and download your MP3′s the iTouch gets a very positive review

Amazon’s MP3 Downloads

image So today thanks to the help of a gift card from my girlfriend for Valentines Day I made my first purchases of MP3′s from Amazon’s site.  I must say it was a great experience.  After a short download of their download app (very very small) I was up and running and downloading MP3′s.  Amazon grabbed my attention a while ago as the first ones to sell non-DRM MP3′s and for a cheaper price than iTunes.  Everything about that last sentence should tell you why I love the service.

You can download full CD’s for $9.99.  After download you can go out and grab the MP3 files and do whatever you want with them like move them to your external hard drive or put them on your MP3 player.  You can also setup the application to automatically add the files to your iTunes Library but I turned that feature off because I store all my MP3′s on a separate hard drive and wanted to do a little tag modification before adding it to my collection.

It is safe to say that this is where all my music will be purchased because it was such an easy and good experience.  The files quickly downloaded and were already setup with album art as well as all the ID3 tag information.  Plus the fact that there is no DRM on them makes them actually worth something to me!

This is how downloading music should be…

MP3Tag Editor

image This is by far and away the best application for updating MP3 tag information because you can do thousands of MP3′s at once with the click of a button.  I also used this application to solve some of my album art issues I experienced after downloading the correct album art. A must have for any MP3 collection

iTunes Album Art

imageimage So after winning (yes I would never buy) an iPod Touch, I decided I would need to add all album art to my MP3 collection.  Because I have ripped my MP3 collection using tools like Audiograbber, I do not have any album art.  Well after some searching, downloading, and experimenting I finally found one that works.  Actually this was mentioned by one of my blogs the exact day I was looking for it.  So I used the application Album Cover Art Downloader, which is multi platform and then went through and started downloading the album art.  After this because iTunes is retarded and doesn’t notice any change to you music library I used my good old friend iTunes Library Updater to get the job done, which I have spoke about before.  After doing all of that my music files now have album art!  It is just a little time consuming to get the library up to date but what are you going to do?

This little thing just plugs right into your headphones and gives you some MP3 goodness.  Personally I love the form factor as it is pretty much totally hidden after being plugged into your headphones.  It comes with a base station for docking for uploading files, which makes me laugh as the base station is about 100 times larger.  It reminds me of that Futurama episode where the cell phone is about the size of a dime, and the charging station is about the size of a desktop computer.

Sony Walkman MP3 Player

Sony’s New USB MP3 player and OLED readout. $60-$80 depending on 1GB or 2GB needs.  The best part about this little player is it plugs straight into your USB port without any cables, also I remember reading that Sony got rid of their management software so it should act just like a pen drive.
