image Process Explorer is basically Task Manager on steroids. It actually makes managing process more intuitive and easier to manage.  It allows you to see the process trees and see how much each process is taking up graphically.

Below is the most current file and of course the link to the software site.  I think one of the reasons this software is so good is Microsoft didn’t write it but they did end up buying the company that did originally product the software.

Remote Desktop Shortcuts

image

Here is a quick shortcut code snippet that you need to make a remote desktop shortcut.  This way you can create shortcuts for all the different remote desktop’s you have and then have Launchy pick them up and you can login very quickly and easily.  Also note you username and password are stored via running the normal remote desktop from your accessories then you are setup to use the shortcut without any issues.

%windir%\system32\mstsc.exe /v:server name /w:1280 /h:1024

imageExecutor is a new player to the game of Windows quick launch applications.  With Executor you get a light footprint application that searches not only your start menu for applications but your documents and searches via keywords.  It is full of custom settings and also doubles as a hot-key application manager allowing you to setup any application to start with a certain hot-key combo.

Being partial to Launchy I found this program to be a little bloated and a little over configurable.  Not bloated in the sense it is too large just bloated in the sense of options they attempted to put into place.  The program is still in beta so I will keep an eye on it as it moves into GA and maybe they will clear up some of the bugs that I was seeing.  Also I really like the hotkey combo with Launchy of Alt-Spacebar to launch it where as with Executor I cannot choose that key combo.  The keywords are a nice touch but it is something else to setup independently and takes too much time.  Perhaps I am getting old and set in my ways but I think so far I will stick with Launchy’s quick easy interface and reliability.   Plus I am a big fan of my new skin for Launchy!

If you still want to check out Executor you can get it here.

Free Partitioning Software

image

Well typically I have done my partitioning using a borrowed version of partition magic.  It looks like this software will do the same exact thing only it doesn’t cost anything.  This is really helpful for creating Linux partitions and cleaning off other partitions.  Sometimes I will change the file system on external drives which this makes it really easy to do.

image Keep your Windows registry clean and up to date with RegSeeker.  It scans your computer and then scans your registry for obsolete entries or incorrect entries.  I run this along with CCleaner once a month to keep things lean on my computer.

After running the registry scan it lets you delete all the entries and creates a backup file you can run by itself incase you need to restore something it deleted.

image CCleaner is a program that I use that is free that does what the name implies, it removes the crap on your computer.  I run this about once a month to keep XP clean and running quickly.

I haven’t had this application delete anything it is not supposed to, and on average it recovers about .5 Gig of space after I run it.

SyncBack Is All The Backup You Need

image I cannot believe I haven’t written about this application yet.  This one is a must have it makes syncing and backing up a snap and also allows you to setup remote backups to FTP and allows you to run schedules.  I use this application once a week to copy my important files from my laptop to my backup hard drives.  I also use it to backup my pen drive (lesson learned there) and to sync 2 external hard drives with all my music as well as syncing my music folder with my girlfriends laptop.  Super easy to use and the price is right….FREE!

image Autoruns is a super lightweight application that allows you with a click of a button to enable or disable something from the Windows Bootup.  This is great for a new computer when you are trying to clean things up.  Unfortunately most of the things that slow my computer down are required to run by my company so not much I can do but I use this application all the time on other peoples computer when they are complaining about poor performance.

Webalizer – Web Log Analyzer

image This program is great, my webhost has this built in but for sites that don’t this is a must have.  With the Windows version you can download it and unzip it, then put the .log file in the same folder and then jump to command prompt and type Webalizer [log file] and it will generate your log stats in almost no time flat.  To view the results you just go to that folder in the web and look at the index.html file.

Launchy

image

I don’t know how I missed this one on my blog.  This program is an awesome time saver and super light weight.  Also with the new version you can do math and stuff right in the window without having to launch calculator.  Very handy and pretty much the only way I launch programs any more for Windows.
